We love Utes as touring vehicles, and if you want a quality Ute it’s hard to beat a Toyota. They build some of the best ones out there and they’re favourites with farmers, maintenance companies and even armies. The Tundra is a larger model, aimed at people who need the practicality of a Ute but want a bit more cabin space too. Big and powerful, it’s a good choice for anyone looking for a combination of a US truck’s size and features with Toyota’s legendary reliability. Huge engines and a choice of standard, double or crewmax cabs mean it’s an ideal tourer that will handle pretty much any terrain.
You probably don’t want to take your Tundra into the bush right away though. It has all the performance you need, but it doesn’t have all the gear. You’ll want to add a few well-chosen accessories before you take on the challenge of Australia’s tougher landscapes. For example, have you checked out the toolkit? It’s fine for changing a tyre beside the road, but a touring vehicle needs a bit more than that. A Tundra weighs over three tonnes, and if you get stuck in sand or mud you won’t be lifting it out with the standard jack. Get an exhaust jack instead and let the engine do the work for you. Add a couple of snatch straps so you can use its immense pulling power to help out anyone else who gets bogged, and a set of sand channels to ease your way across the soft bits.
Going for a crewmax cab gives you a lot more interior space but it does cut into your cargo capacity. Push it back up again with a Uneek bed extender – this acts as a new tailgate, while the original one becomes a useful bit of extra bed. When you set up camp for the night the bed extender can be dismounted and used as a handy bench, too. Want even more space? Add a bed rack – they’re perfect for carrying bikes, or storing your camping gear for easier access.
The Tundra is an excellent Ute, but with a few upgrades from Tough Toys you can make it even better. We’re all about helping you create the ultimate expedition vehicle, and we deliver at great prices anywhere in Australia, so if you want to get the most from your Tundra start checking out our amazing accessories.
