Water is one of those things that you just can't do without. It's possible to get by without most things, but not the wet stuff. Most of us can easily fill up on it by turning a tap, but it's a bit different when you're out on the trail. When you're spending time away from civilisation you need to make sure you can keep yourself supplied with safe drinking water.
In many parts of Australia water is in short supply and you're going to need to take it with you. That's unfortunate, because it's heavy stuff, but if you're out in the desert there's no way around it. Luckily a good 4x4 has space for a few jerry cans, so it's possible to carry enough to see you through, but if you can cut the load it doesn't hurt. There are plenty of places in Australia where water is easy enough to find, but the problem with sourcing it locally is that it often isn't safe to drink. Bacteria and natural toxins can make you pretty ill, and even if you don't end up with anything life threatening it's not fun to be planning your route from toilet to toilet.
This isn't just a problem for off road enthusiasts, of course. The military have to haul a lot of water around too, and they're always looking for solutions. British company LifeSaver Systems has come up with one - an advanced water filter. It filters out bacteria, pesticides, heavy metal contamination and even chemicals like chlorine and sulphur. You don't need to use purification tablets that make your water taste like a swimming pool, because the filter is so fine all the nasties get caught in it. The result is safe, clean water from just about any source.
LifeSaver have developed a range of products for military use, and they're now available to you too. We stock their drinking bottle, which is pump operated and will clean up to 250 litres. It can even be used to blast a high-pressure jet of sterile water into wounds, letting you clean any cuts rapidly and effectively.
For heavier duty use we have the LifeSaver jerry can. Ideal for carrying in your vehicle, this holds 20 litres of water at a time and lets you purify 20,000 litres before the filter needs replaced.
LifeSaver containers filter the water on demand, not on collection. This means you don't have to hang around waiting for water to run through the filter into the container; you can fill up quickly and drive off with a can full of unpurified water, then when you need some it comes out freshly filtered. This also avoids having filtered water get contaminated with dust and bacteria. LifeSaver Systems are the number one solution if you want a steady supply of clean water.
