SSANGYONG Rexton

Korean company Ssangyong have some good models for anyone looking for an affordable car based on sound technology, and their 4wd range is no exception. The Ute-based Musso was a capable off-roader and its replacement, the Rexton, is at least as good. It’s built on a Mercedes platform – the first-generation M-Class – and it uses license-built Mercedes engines as well. There’s a choice of 2.7 and 2.9-litre turbodiesels and a 3.2-litre petrol. The diesels are the best option for off-road driving because they deliver more torque – and they also use a lot less fuel, which matters when you have to carry it with you. Get one of those, and fit it out with the right gear, and you have a really capable touring wagon that will take you just about anywhere in Australia.

If you’re planning any long trips you don’t want to be sleeping in a swag beside your vehicle every night, so get one of our Tough awnings mounted on the roof and when you stop you can create a sheltered space in a couple of minutes. You won’t find awnings bigger than ours, and they’re also built to last. They now have built-in LED lighting, too, so no more messing about with hanging lanterns when you’re relaxing at the end of the day.

There’s plenty room in the back of a Rexton, but you can make better use of it if you don’t just pile your gear in. A drawer system lets you keep stuff organised – stash things you use often in the drawers, and load larger items on top. Make sure you fit a cargo barrier to stop anything flying into the back seats when you hit a bump.

Talking about bumps, there are plenty of them in the Outback. There are plenty of stumps, rocks and sand traps too. If you spend any amount of time off road then sooner or later you’re going to get stuck. The Rexton’s toolkit is fine for normal road driving but it’s not going to get you out of the mud. For that you need an exhaust or high lift jack, and a good set of sand tracks. Add a pair of snatch straps to your recovery gear as well – they’re essential if you need to get hauled out of something.

The Rexton’s a good vehicle, built on well proven mechanics and with really impressive off-road performance. At Tough Toys we have the accessories and expertise to help you get the most out of yours, so get it geared up to go and hit the bush.
