If you want one vehicle that suits all your normal driving during the week, but has the toughness and 4wd performance to do some touring as well, a crossover might be just what you’re after. We’re always happy to push an Australian company so if you’re looking at crossovers why not go for a Holden Captiva? The successor to their Commodore-based Adventra, the Captiva is a tough and capable machine that just needs the right gear to make a great off roader.

The Captiva has a lot of load space, so it’s easy to shove a big tent in the back. You have other options though. How about taking one of our Bushpower fridges with you to carry a supply of fresh food and beer? Don’t worry about the tent – just fit one of our high quality awnings to the roof bars. We have some of the biggest awnings on the market so you can sort out a really huge shelter in a couple of minutes. Add walls or a mozzie net to it for even more comfort.

Most Captivas come with a satnav system, but these are mostly geared to people who’re looking for stuff that’s right beside the road. Once you head off into the bush they get a lot less useful. Back yours up with some of our fantastic touring guides, which are stuffed full of great info about where to go, where to stay and what to do. We have maps and guides from Boiling Billy, Hema and Australia Wide, covering the whole country. From accurate road atlases to lists of the best 4wd trails, our range has everything.

Once you venture off the roads your biggest hazard is always getting stuck, so make sure your Captiva has all the recovery gear you need to get yourself out again. At a minimum you need some good sand channels and a snatch strap, but we recommend you pack a decent shovel and an air jack too. Tough Toys have our own range of recovery tools and we also sell some great kit from Mean Mother, Front Runner and other leading brands.

Don’t forget the small stuff – any touring trip goes a lot better when you take care of all the details. From seat organisers to stubbie coolers there are loads of little extras in the Tough Toys that will make off road driving and camping easier and more fun. We’re here to find all the best gear for you and your Captiva.
