Brown Davis Long Range Fuel Tanks

It doesn't matter how tough and well maintained your wagon is, there's one thing that's guaranteed to bring it to a halt. Without fuel you won't be going anywhere. That's not a problem if you're driving around town, because you'll pass plenty of fuel stations. If you're a bit more adventurous fuel is something that needs careful planning, though. Fuel supplies are further apart in the outback and you need to have enough to reach the next one with a good reserve for safety. What do you do if the distances involved are pushing the capacity of your fuel tank? The traditional solution is to load up with jerry cans, but that eats into your load space and some people worry about safety.

There's a better solution, though. Most 4x4 vehicles come fitted with fuel tanks based on those used in standard cars. That makes them cheaper and easier to replace, but usually there's a lot of empty space left inside the bodywork of a larger vehicle. A bit of clever design can fit in a much larger tank without needing to modify the vehicle. With some models it's even possible to fit extra tanks in void spaces, increasing capacity even more. Brown Davis have developed a range of extended and auxiliary tanks to fit most popular 4WD models, and we stock the full range.

Brown Davis long-range tanks are designed to use the standard mounting points on your vehicle, so fitting one is a simple job; there's no drilling, no welding and any decent mechanic can do it in a couple of hours. The tanks are carefully designed and precisely built so they'll always line up perfectly with the original fittings. They're also made from 2mm cold-rolled steel with an aluminium coating, to ensure corrosion resistance and strength. These tanks are so tough that they don't need additional protection. Brown Davis also make the outstanding Underguard protection systems, but they're happy for these tanks to be used without an extra layer of armour. Most standard tanks are made of much thinner steel, but the specialist plate used in the Brown Davis long-range ones is in a class of its own.

The Brown Davis range includes three types of tank, all of them available for multiple models. Here are your options:

  • Replacement tanks. These are a drop in replacement for your standard tank. The increase in capacity varies with the model but can be up to double the standard. That translates into a lot of extra range.
  • Auxiliary tanks. If a long-range model just isn't enough, many vehicles will take an auxiliary tank too. Complete with its own fuel gauge, one of these is a great way of using void space in your vehicle. A changeover system automatically switches between main and auxiliary in response to fuel levels, and your dashboard fuel gauge will display the level in the tank you're using. Some models even have a fuel transfer pump, which transfers fuel into your main tank to keep it topped up.
  • Gas conversion tanks. Switching to LPG can save you a lot of cash, but there are times when you can't find a station that sells it. That's when you need a reserve of conventional fuel. Keeping the standard tank might be overkill, though; that big space can be better used for a large LPG bottle. A Brown Davis gas conversion tank is similar to an auxiliary tank; it fits somewhere else in the bodywork and lets you use the main tank space for your main fuel.

It doesn't matter what 4WD you drive; chances are we have a range of Brown Davis tanks to fit it. Sort yourself out with more fuel and better damage protection, and open up even more opportunities in the great Australian landscape.
